Roles – Timer

Taking on this role improves time management skills.

One of the skills Toastmasters practice is expressing a thought within a specific time. The timer is responsible for monitoring time for each meeting segment and each speaker. As Timer, you:

  • Acquire the timing/signaling equipment from the sergeant at arms and know how to operate it.
  • Explain the timing rules and demonstrate the signal device if called upon to do so. 
  • Throughout the meeting, listen carefully to each participant and signal them accordingly.
  • When called to report, announce the speakers’ names and the time taken

The Timer is responsible for keeping track of speech and evaluation time during the meeting. Here is the Timer Duty:

1. Prior to the Meeting  

To time each speech, you can use online service like below:

2. During the Meeting  

When the Toastmaster calls you to explain your role, please explain your role to the audience. (see Sample script below)

When speaker takes stage: *Important*

Start your stopwatch when the speaker expressing definite verbal or nonverbal communications. (please wait while the speaker is adjusting the camera, checking audio and prepare the stage)

During the speech and evaluation,

  • please show the color to your camera. Keep it until you are spotlighted by Zoom Host.
  • Please keep log for each speaker’s speech length.

3. Report

General Evaluator will ask your report at the evaluate session. Please give your report. You can verbally report the summary and details in the chatbox.

Introducing your role:

Thank you, Mister/Madam Toastmaster, Fellow Toastmasters, and welcome Guests!

As Timer, I will be helping the speakers practice expressing a thought within a specific time. My duty is to time prepared speeches, Table Topics speeches, and Speech Evaluations during this meeting.

For Speaker #1 (name), the speech is 5-7 minutes. I will show: the Green at 5 minutes, Yellow at 6 minutes, Red at 7 minutes, and the speaker has 30 seconds to wrap up.

For Speaker #2 (name),….

Table Topics are Minimum 1 minute, maximum 2min & 30 seconds.

I will show: The Green at 1 minute,

The Yellow at 1.5 minutes,

The Red at 2 minutes. You have 30 seconds to wrap up.

Evaluations are 2 to 3 minutes.  

I will show:

The Green At 2minutes,

The Yellow at 2 minutes and 30 second,

and The Red at 3 minutes. You have 30 seconds to wrap up.

At the end of the meeting, I will report the times of each participant. Thank you, Mr./Madam Toastmasters.
